For those of you who have missed Long Zheng's blog this is a really interesting article about more Longhorn concepts that never materialized further than developement.
Quote from Long Zheng: "Thanks to a tip from Steve Clayton, a treasure chest of Windows Longhorn inspired PC design concepts has been just unearthed. An industrial design company located in San Francisco called Ammunition were recently interviewed as part of a Wired article on evolving PC designs. Following the link to their website shows an array of computer-related design concepts for a variety of companies including Microsoft. An image overlay of a Longhorn screenshot indicates these were commissioned for the purpose of demonstrating to OEMs how Microsoft envisioned Longhorn PCs. In relations to the other Microsoft-commissioned Windows PC concepts by Carbon Design, these are much earlier. The Aero Glass theme is clearly carried throughout in both concepts." ![]() Microsoft Oxygen concept desktop system that converts from typical use mode, to media viewing, to pen input. ![]() Microsoft Zinc concept intended for countertop use. ![]() Microsoft Carbon concept micro PC with high object value. ![]() Microsoft Argon concept entertainment biased all-in-one PC. ![]() Microsoft Cobalt convertible notebook/tablet system. It’s interesting to see how similar the Oxygen is to the current generation iMacs when they are easily years apart of each other. But it’s important to realize Apple designs Macs but Microsoft doesn’t design Windows PCs. To say Microsoft doesn’t have taste is not entirely correct if the above concepts are any indication. I just saw this while browsing my way through at school. It's amazing how Microsoft are going to use these concepts for the near future.

Hmm, I love them!
Though, the laptop one might not be very popular with the large bit at the back. |

Then Why Microsoft has left Longhorn Concept ! You remember WinFS? and (oh man my brain is a cheese! wth was it called?) Avalon (?) etc... That should be standard today and longhorn would be old, because it was meant to come out 2003! MS had the broblem that WinFS was too slow and wasn't improved and good enough to find its way on your machine! It was too much, MS wanted to do for the OS after XP and it took too long and they were hanging at many problems to solve... So they left Longhorn because they weren't able to get more far with it and so they started again and Vista was born! And that's what I think it looks like! Vista looks like it is just a little step before the next generation comes and they're updating their Longhorn Concept! But it's really sad that they were so far and just had to quit it all! --> Correct me if anything is wrong... I don't know much about LH! And these PC's are awesome! They remind me of the Athens PC (the Microsoft iMac Offtopic Comment:
oh noes, and it reminds me of the cherry blossom (or whatever it's called) wallpaper EDIT: I would really like to have a full screen high res screenshot of the longhorn concept used in the oxygen concept! (1st pic) |

I just don't understand how so much of this fell apart. I blame Jim Allchin and his Apple fanboyism

I just don't understand how so much of this fell apart. yeah i have to admit, i have no clue where they went wrong....with the whole concept, it just makes no sense to generate that much info about a product only to have it scraped? my big question is where are all of these concept PC's now? including the Athens Concept.... what about Agona, or Hermes...where are all these things? peas cityboy -------------------- ![]() moves are being made, trust me! and Kanye still sux |
