> Apple claims to have fixed 27" iMac problem
Posted by Cr1t1cal® - 02-6-10 10:43 - 2 comments
An unspecified number of users reported problems with the screen of their iMac, including cracked and flickering displays, and screens that appeared to have a yellow tint.

Apple has issued two software updates that say has resolved the issues with the screens. One, update TS3207, updates the display firmware to "address issues that may cause intermittent flickering". The second, update DL984, updates the graphics firmware on ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 graphics cards to "address issues that may cause image corruption or display flickering".

Some websites, including Gizmodo, said that Apple had offered a 15 per cent cash refund to customers suffering from these problems, but the technology company has refused to comment on the speculation.

It's three months since Apple unveiled its update iMac desktops, but shipments of the 27in model have been regularly delayed. Apple has attributed the delays to the popularity of the computer, and said it was "working hard" to fulfil orders "as quickly as possible".

"The 27in iMac has been a huge hit with customers, and we are working to increase supply to meet with strong demand."

Early reports from iMac owners appear to confirm Apple's belief that the updates will resolve any lingering display issues. Several iMac users, posting on the Apple discussion forums, said they were no longer experiencing problems with the screen on their iMac.

"Following the Tuesday installation of the latest update, my iMac no longer exhibits any symptoms of the flicker/tear/blackout problem that it had out of the box," wrote one user, named "Reinfeld". "Cautiously optimistic. Thanks, Apple! I hope this fixes the trouble for everyone here."

> Vodafone suspends employee after obscene tweet
Posted by Cr1t1cal® - 02-5-10 22:05 - 1 comments
Vodafone has been forced to issue a grovelling apology to its thousands of followers on Twitter after one of its customer service staff broadcast an obscene message on the micro-blogging service.
http://otbthink.com/otblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Twitter-Logo.PNG-150x150.png
The message appeared on Vodafone's official Twitter account, which is used by the company to deal with customer complaints. Instead of the usual helpful hints on how to make the most of its range of handsets or direct responses to individual customer service queries, VodafoneUK's 8,824 followers were treated this afternoon to a message reading "VodafoneUK is fed up of dirty homo's and is going after beaver".

Within minutes of the message appearing hundreds of Vodafone customers had contacted the company through Twitter to ask whether its account had been hacked. Despite Vodafone deleting the message from its Twitterfeed, hawk-eyed users of the service saved a copy and were quickly sending it across the internet.

Vodafone was forced to release a stream of apologies, replying to each user individually to say "we weren't hacked. A severe breach of rules by staff in our building, dealing with that internally. We're very sorry". By the evening the company had been forced to release that message to hundreds of individual followers.

"An individual posted an obscene remark on the Vodafone UK Twitter account," said a spokesman for the company. "The individual has been suspended pending further notice."

The "tweet" is understood to have emanated from Vodafone's customer service centre in Stoke, where its web team uses social networking sites such as Twitter to keep in contact with users.

It is just the latest in a growing list of social networking gaffes. As more people sign up to services such as Twitter and Facebook, organisations are having to police their activities as well as maintain their own presence on such sites.

A year ago Virgin Atlantic sacked 13 cabin crew after they used Facebook to call passengers "chavs" and claimed that the airline's planes were full of cockroaches.

Some companies have had their own use of Twitter hijacked by enterprising web users. Last April the Telegraph newspaper set up a so-called "Twitterfall" for its coverage of the budget. The idea was to include any tweets being created on the service that included the tag "#budget". Unfortunately Twitter users spotted that it was unmoderated, and embarrassed the paper and its owners with a stream of tweets such as "Breaking news: Barclay Brothers to pick up your tax bill in unprecedented act of philanthropy. #Budget" – and worse.

Apple is paying unhappy customers an additional fee to keep them sweet when they return faulty 27-inch iMacs for a refund, according to a new report.

Tech site Gizmodo quotes a UK-based Apple Authorised Service Provider/Reseller that claims Apple is offering an additional 15 per cent to those who return faulty 27-inch iMacs.

Numerous reports, including on Apple's own support forums, claim faults including flickering and yellowing screen have blighted the 27-inch iMac, introduced late last year.

"The short of it is that Apple doesn't have any 27-inch LCDs in Europe and there is a backlog of 230 machines that are waiting on this part, with no eta on shipping. So to keep customers happy(ish) they're paying them," the obviously unnamed Apple Authorised Service Provider/Reseller tells Gizmodo.

"That's right Apple is now (quietly) offering people a full refund and 15 per cent of the price extra, and they are arranging a free pick up of your machine. I'm not 100 per cent if this is the case in the US, but it's happening over here in the UK."

"As far as i know it's both Apple stores and 3rd party retailers, but the refund itself comes from Apple not the 3rd party retailer. We've had two customer that have both gotten there machines' refunded plus the 15 per cent."

The 15 per cent payout works out at between £206 and £245 depending on the iMac configuration.

The cheapest 27-inch iMac listed on the UK Apple Store is £1,378, the higher spec Quad Core option is £1,634. Both are showing 3 weeks for shipping, a timescale introduced before Christmas.

On Monday, Apple released the 27-inch iMac Display Firmware Update 1.0, which promises to "address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering" iMacs.

This latest firmware update doesn’t appear to address the yellow tinting appearing at the bottom of some iMac screens, although for many the update appears to resolve flickering screens issues.
