> Windows 7 Arriving Months Ahead of Schedule?
Posted by Greyham - 10-23-08 12:04 - 3 comments
(IMG:http://www.joejoe.org/storage/vistaorb.png) Mary Jo Foley has recently posted an article in which she believes Windows 7 could be released far earlier than the previous date of January 2010 (exactly three years after the release of Vista). In her article she notes that Microsoft does not want another January release, rather she predicts a pre-summer holiday release so it can be preloaded, onto back-to-school notebooks in particular.

OEMs are also starting to admit that they expect Windows 7 towards the end of 2009, but by far the biggest clue to a 2009 release is found on the official WinHEC website where it says:
QUOTE
“Be one of the first to see what’s new in Windows 7 and be among a select few to receive a pre-beta build of Windows 7. Join us as WinHEC 2008 – Register today. WinHEC is the only chance for you to engage with the team at this level – there is not another WinHEC planned before Windows 7 is released.”

Now you may think that the next WinHEC is going to be October/November next year, but in fact it is currently scheduled for New Orleans for the days of May 3-7. However keep in mind that this year’s WinHEC was also scheduled around May but was postponed, so Microsoft could do the same with next years.

Finally with Vista’s SP2 arriving soon (or at least a Beta of it) it could be the final service pack for Vista. Particularly when you realise that XP only got Service Pack 3 this year, its 7th year since release whereas Vista is not even two years old yet. If Windows 7 does indeed get released early next year it would be at least 10 months ahead of the ‘public’ schedule and it could be that Microsoft wanted to be 100% sure that 7 would arrive on time. Finished.

> Vista SP2 Invites sent to Beta Testers, Beta within 4 Weeks?
Posted by Greyham - 10-18-08 02:19 - 11 comments
(IMG:http://www.joejoe.org/storage/vista.png) Microsoft this week revealed there will be a Vista SP2 and it will arrive prior to the release of Windows 7, Microsoft’s next consumer operating system. Neowin has today received some insider information regarding the second service pack for Vista (and Server 2008), stating that Microsoft has sent out beta testing invites to a group of people.

The pack includes ‘Windows Search 4’, Bluetooth wireless support, support for the new VIA 64-bit CPU and more application compatibility updates.

The service packs are anticipated to go to a possibly public Beta within 4 weeks.
